Have you ever been home alone and had the feeling you were not alone? You probably weren’t alone. But who or what was near you?
The Creepy Feeling that You are not Alone
What kind of things would make you think you house is haunted? It could be an odd sound, movement, or just a sensation down the back of your neck. Whatever it is, it leaves you feeling like that you are not the only one in the house.
You may dismiss it, you may watch a show to get it off your mind, or you may run out of the house as fast as you can screaming.
That last one was me – that is the first time something like that happened when I was very young.
Watching TV while lying on the couch, I saw some movement out of the corner of my eye in the kitchen and noticed a magazine on the dinner table in the area where I saw the movement. I dismissed this as my imagination and kept watching. Soon it happened again. I was a little creeped out, but I once again dismissed it and went back to watching the show. A few seconds later, the magazine slid off the table and onto the floor.
At that point I jumped off the couch, ran into the garage, grabbed my bike and rode away as fast as I could to a friend’s house.
The Reason We Fear the Supernatural
I wondered if my house was haunted. At that point in my life, I had no reference for what I had experienced other than scary movies. I assumed that whatever moved that magazine was able to harm me and wanted to harm me, so I naturally felt fear.
Since that time I have had several more experiences in more than one house, anything from bowls sliding off the counter, to footsteps being heard, doorstop springs being sprung and unexplained crashing sounds.
When you suddenly realize that you are not alone, it’s natural to freak out, but as I came to realize that there is a spirit realm, another dimension that interacts with our own dimensions, I merely saw these events as curiosities.
Afterall, is moving a bowl across the counter such a great feat? You can easily do that yourself.
In fact are there any examples I mentioned above that you could not do yourself?
If I now imagine a spirit pushing a bowl off the counter, it seems pretty mundane. A two year old could do that! So why should I fear something that can mimic the actions of a two year old?
Thinking about it that way, this supernatural feat seems pretty unimpressive.
Was the spirit trying to harm me or just trying to make me fear it? Was it trying to increase the little power it had by causing me to fear it?
Once you realize the power of these spirits comes from the power you give them, it becomes much easier to control and even eliminate the fear they bring.
Knowing Your Authority
Whether you fear them or not, you probably don’t want uninvited spirits roaming around your home. While they may not harm you physically, they are not there to be friendly. They are deceptive spirits and can create an atmosphere that can affect your emotions and disrupt relationships in your house. (see posts Are Ghosts Real? The Spiritual Masquerade and Are Demons Real?)
So how can you get rid of them? New age practices won’t work… I tried them. No, burning sage will not work, speaking light over your house won’t make them leave – you need authority.
Shortly after surrendering my life to Jesus, I found out something I did not know – that born again believers have authority over spirits.
With this newfound knowledge and faith that this is true, I went through the house casting out every spirit in Jesus’ name and prayed for angelic protection around the house. From that point forward, the spooky activity stopped; no footsteps, no objects moving, no strange sounds. My house was no longer “haunted.”
Now, I’m not suggesting you give your life to Jesus just to gain authority over spirits – there are a thousand other reasons to do so. But if you are a believer, you have authority, whether you are eight years old or eighty.
So, if you think your house is haunted, recognize your authority and use it.
