Have you ever been home alone and had the unmistakable feeling that someone or something was there with you?

The Creepy Feeling That You Are Not Alone

What kind of things would make you think your house is haunted? It could be an odd sound, movement, or just a sensation down the back of your neck. Whatever it is, it leaves you feeling that you may not be alone.

You may dismiss it. You may turn up the TV and try not to think about it. Or you may run out of the house as fast as you can, screaming.

I chose the third option.

I was very young the first time something happened that I couldn’t explain. I was lying on the couch watching TV when I caught movement out of the corner of my eye. It came from the kitchen, near a magazine sitting on the dining table.

I dismissed it as my imagination and kept watching. Soon, it happened again. I was a little creeped out, but again I convinced myself it was nothing.

A few seconds later, the magazine slid off the table and onto the floor. That was enough for me!

I jumped off the couch, ran into the garage, grabbed my bike, and rode as fast as I could to a friend’s house.

The Reason We Fear the Supernatural

For a long time afterward, I wondered whether my house was haunted. At that age, my only frame of reference for anything supernatural came from scary movies. And in scary movies, whatever moves things in your house usually isn’t there to help you. So naturally, I was afraid.

Since that time, I have had several more unexplained experiences in different houses, everything from bowls sliding off the counter, to footsteps being heard, doorstop springs suddenly vibrating, and unexplained crashing sounds.

But over time, something changed. The events didn’t necessarily stop. My reaction to them did.

When you suddenly realize that you may not be alone, it’s natural to freak out. But as I came to believe that there is a spirit realm, another dimension that interacts with our own, I began to see these events less as terrifying encounters and more as curiosities.

After all, is moving a bowl across the counter really that impressive? You can easily do that yourself.

If I imagine a spirit pushing a bowl off the counter, it doesn’t seem nearly as frightening as it once did. A two-year-old could do that! So why should I fear something simply because I cannot see what caused it?

Thinking about it that way, the supernatural suddenly seems a lot less intimidating.

That led me to another question: What if fear itself is part of the point?

Was the spirit trying to harm me, or was it simply attempting to make me fear it? Was it trying to increase the little power it had by causing me to be afraid?

I began to understand that fear can give these experiences far more influence over us than the events themselves deserve. Once I stopped responding with fear, they lost much of their power over me.

Knowing Your Authority

But losing your fear of spiritual activity is not the same as wanting it in your home.

Whether you fear these spirits or not, you probably don’t want uninvited spirits roaming around your house. While they may not harm you physically, I do not believe their presence is harmless or friendly. I believe deceptive spirits can influence the atmosphere of a home, affect emotions, and contribute to disruption within relationships.

So how can you get rid of them?

I tried New Age practices myself, but they did not solve the problem. Burning sage did not give me lasting peace. Speaking “light” over my home did not make the activity stop. What I eventually came to believe I needed was not another ritual, but spiritual authority.

Shortly after surrendering my life to Jesus, I learned something that completely changed the way I viewed these experiences: Christians have authority over spirits.

Believing that, I went through my house and commanded every spirit to leave in Jesus’ name. I also prayed for God’s protection over my home.

From that point forward, the spooky activity stopped: no footsteps, no objects moving, no strange sounds.

My house was no longer “haunted.”

And more importantly, I was no longer afraid.

Now, I’m not suggesting you give your life to Jesus simply to gain authority over spirits. There are a thousand other reasons to do so. But if you are a believer, I believe Scripture gives you spiritual authority regardless of your age or how long you have been a Christian.

So, if you think your house is haunted, don’t begin with fear. Begin by recognizing who has the greater authority. And if you belong to Christ, exercise using the authority you have been given.
